This antique puffy mariner and jumbo trace link chain is defined by its colour and its link shape. Weighing 45.7 grams in 9ct gold, the links are deeply rounded and generously sized, giving the chain a strong, sculptural profile when worn. At 7.8 millimetres across, each link presents a broad curve of gold, catching light along its surface rather than disappearing into a flat line.
The gold colour is unmistakably antique. There is a warm peach base with soft rose undertones, even and luminous throughout the length of the chain. It is the kind of colour you simply do not see in modern production, and it gives the piece an immediate sense of age and richness.
The chain is fitted with two swivel Albert clasps, both stamped J.G&S for John Grinsell & Sons of Birmingham, a respected late Victorian maker. The scale of the clasps matches the weight and width of the chain, keeping the proportions visually satisfying.
At 16.5 inches, it sits close to the collarbone, where the link width and colour are most effective. It works beautifully worn on its own, but the double Albert clasps also make it an excellent base for charm or pendant loading, allowing you to build the front of the chain without disrupting the line or balance of the links.
